Know the History?
The name Andaman most likely is derived from the name of the monkey god of Hindu mythology, Hanuman. The name Nicobar probably derives from the Tamil word nakkavaram (“land of the naked”). The 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk I-ching, the Arab travelers of the 9th century, and Marco Polo (c. 1254–1324) are among those who mentioned the islands.

The most widely spoken language on the islands is not Andamanese or Nicobarese. It is Bengali followed by Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Andaman Creole Hindi is also widely used as a trade language in the Andaman islands.
Pandunus or Nicobar Breadfruit is a rare fruit found and widely eaten in Nicobar. The only active volcano in India, the Barren Island, is present in Andaman Islands. The largest living arthropod in the world, Birgus Latro or Robber crab, resides here.
The 20 rupee note depicts a scene from Andaman and Nicobar islands. A penal settlement, including the dreaded Kala PaniJail (Cellular Jail), was established here by the British after the revolt of 1857.
